Breast Cancer: Recognizing the Early Signs, Understanding the Stages, and Rethinking Prevention by Dr. Ravishankar Polisetty

“I thought it would go away,” she said.

Her story is not uncommon. Across the world, many women delay medical consultation because early breast cancer symptoms are often painless and subtle. The absence of pain creates a false sense of security.

Breast cancer has now become one of the most common cancers among women globally. In India, the incidence continues to rise, particularly in urban populations where lifestyle changes, delayed childbirth, metabolic disorders, environmental exposures, and hormonal shifts intersect.

What makes breast cancer particularly dangerous is not simply its aggressiveness but its ability to remain silent during the early stages, allowing abnormal cells to multiply unnoticed.

Understanding how to identify these early signals may be the difference between early cure and late-stage treatment.

Early Signs and Symptoms of Breast Cancer

The earliest signs of breast cancer often appear quietly. The most commonly recognized sign is a painless lump in the breast, but the disease may present in several other ways.

Women may notice a subtle change in breast shape, a localized thickening of tissue, or skin dimpling that resembles the texture of an orange peel. In some cases, the nipple may retract inward or produce abnormal discharge.

These changes occur because abnormal cells begin multiplying within the breast ducts or lobules. Initially, the abnormal cells remain confined to their original location, but over time they may invade surrounding tissues and spread to lymph nodes.

This is why regular breast self-examination and screening mammography remain critical tools in early detection.

Understanding the Stages of Breast Cancer

Breast cancer develops gradually and progresses through distinct stages.
